Art Nouveau
1890 - 1914
The Art Nouveau period occurred at the turn of the 20th century. The theme of the jewelry of this period could be described as “Jewelry as Art”. The beauty of woman is a major recurring theme throughout the jewelry of this period. The jewelry is characterized by pale colors, soft curves, and free flowing asymmetrical lines sometimes referred to as “Whiplash Lines”. Gemstones incorporated into the jewelry were Moonstones, Amber, Opal, Citrine, and Peridot. Materials such as Ivory, Tortoise Shell, and Pearls were also used. The designs of Jeweler/Artist Rene Lalique are a good example of the jewelry incorporated during this period.
